The ‘Strait’ Skinny: Jeff Foiles on the Hot Seat

Celebrity Waterfowler Facing Serious Charges in U.S., Canada

I remember, and vividly so, the first time I met Jeff Foiles.

It was at Game Fair, the popular late-summer outdoor show near Anoka, Minnesota. A semi-circle had formed around Foiles, who was wearing a lanyard thick with his designer Strait Meat calls and glittery waterfowl bands, the spoils of his many years of gunning. The shoulder-to-shoulder scrum, mostly young duck hunters acting like star-struck groupies, were hanging on his every word, like he had just discovered the cure for cancer.

The adulation of these twenty-something waterfowlers shocked me and clearly tickled Foiles. I had never seen such blind hero worship for anyone, let alone someone who for a living guided hunters, manufactured calls and produced hunting videos.

He's not JC, I remember thinking.

For the first time as a reporter, I watched the celebrity waterfowling culture reveal itself, and Jeff Foiles was its Pied Piper. He held court that day like he had just been given the keys to the kingdom; like he was entitled to something long overdue. The entire mini drama curdled my stomach (it still does), but Foiles was merely basking in his celebrity and leveraging his momentum. His calls were hot. His videos too. And his stature in the waterfowling industry was growing as fast as his ego. With a blend of arrogance and narcissism put at odds only by an occasional nod to modesty, Foiles seemed to be living—and enjoying—the good life.

But now the little empire he built off a public resource may be crumbling, torn asunder by a series of alleged waterfowl and waterfowl-hunting violations in the U.S. and Canada that some in the waterfowl industry say has already made him radioactive. (U.S. Charges | Canadian Charges).

Indeed, sympathy appears to be in short supply. In fact, the S word of the day is schadenfraude: taking pleasure in the misfortunes of others. Foiles, it appears, has burned a few bridges in his day.

Foiles faces 12 charges in Canada and 23 in the U.S., all vile and heinous, although some more than others.

According to a story in the Alberta-based Edmonton Journal, the Canadian federal indictment "alleges that on several occasions, during guided hunting tours, Foiles repeatedly violated daily limits in Canada. During an October 2004 guided duck hunt near Camrose, which was filmed for his hunting videos, Foiles allegedly killed at least 24 ducks in one day. The next day the group, led by Foiles, killed about 25 Canada geese. In Alberta, the daily limit for geese is five and for ducks is eight."

According to the indictment, "when the cameraman became upset at the number of geese being killed and shut off the camera, Foiles ordered him to continue filming..."

During the fall of 2005—and this is the charge that, if true, boggles the mind—the indictment says "Foiles travelled to a city park in Loveland, Colo., after learning many Canada geese wearing neck collars and leg tags had been spotted at the park." According to the story, he allegedly used bread to lure the tagged geese to his vehicle, where he shot them with a pellet gun and removed the tags. U.S. officials allege Foiles used the tags he collected from the geese to decorate his duck and goose call lanyard, "which he wore prominently on his commercial hunting videos to advertise his skill and experience as a migratory waterfowl hunter."

Truth is, Jeff Foiles may be innocent of all the charges leveled against him (In the U.S., he has pleaded not guilty) and is obviously entitled to due process under the law. However, if the city park incident is proven true, not to mention the other alleged charges, Foiles will have set the Everest of standards for vile, heinous behavior while impersonating a hunter and should forever be persona non grata in waterfowling circles.

Charges or no charges, Foiles is guilty as sin of debasing our waterfowling culture and making duck and goose hunters everywhere look like knuckle-dragging Neanderthals. His videos are waterfowling pornography that fictionalize our heritage as nothing more than glorified trap shooting, with kill after kill after gratuitous kill (the last time I watched a Foiles video I was sickened by how some of the footage showed the same bird getting shot multiple times, as if dead isn't quite dead enough; pathetic).

Simply put, Foiles has sullied our collective image as duck hunters, especially with the non-hunting public, who outnumber us in by the millions and who, at some point, could decide our fate.

My question is this: Where do we go, and what do we do, to get our reputations back? We start by cleaning up our act and taking responsibility for our actions—all of us. Our culture has ample room for disparate views and customs, but we need to draw a clear, definitive line between videos that stereotype and those that enlighten and educate. Commerce is commerce; we can't stop anyone from making a video. However, we don't have to purchase them, and as consumers that's our trump card.

While I believe these "hunting" videos only appeal to a small demographic (young, male hunters), they do absolutely nothing to enrich or grow our heritage. Most of today's videos are like movie trailers—long on titillation, short on context.

Which brings me to the presentation of the videos themselves. Whatever happened to thoughtful storytelling and putting the kill into context? We need to showcase waterfowl hunting in all its glory—the beginning, the middle and the end.

Instead of a video team collecting an infinite number of "kill" shots (a very time-consuming, expensive and laborious task, by the way), why not frame a kill/harvest sequence around a professionally scripted and shot segment on how to clean and prepare ducks and geese? Why not do it in the field with the setting sun as the scene's endearing backdrop? Why not celebrate the hunt's bounty on camera, with wild protein as the sacrament? Such creativity, ode to nature and fidelity to the long-term future of waterfowling, I believe, will be rewarded in the marketplace. And the storylines are endless.

The Jeff Foiles scandal is an opportunity to regain our moral compass as a waterfowling culture. It will be a damn shame if we let this opportunity go to waste. Let the dialogue begin.

What say you?

  1. I think he should have All his hunting rights taken away from him, All of his staff/guides, anyone associated with him or his business. And he should NOT be allowed to ever own or carry a firearm in the U.S. or Canada. I'm a Prostaff Guide and owner of a waterfowl guide season in Nebraska and this guy gives all of the good hunting guides a bad name! Lock him up!!!

  2. All I can say is wow, all that is wrong in this world and you choose this to get your panties in a bunch over? I agree the videos are stupid and even the shows on the Outdoor Channel etc are getting to where there is 5 minutes of show and 25 minutes of commercial which is frustrating to watch. But to get on your thrown and preach about this is also stupid in the grand sceme of things. I watch the shows that actually teach you something about set-ups, calling etc. I dont care that the guys on them get their limit every time, that does me no good. Good luck.

    1. Your an idiot! Jeff Foiles is a repulsive, sick ego maniac with serious mental issues! I have watched one of his videos and was sickened after the first few minutes of watching. I have hunted my entire life and cherish the outdoors and respect the wildlife I harvest! It is not all about killing everything in sight and making a mockery of the dead animals as he commonly does which led to the charges in Canada. I can not believe people idolize guys like this because they act tough and play heavy metal music over videos of them unethically killing every bird in site with blatant disregard for bag limits and wildlife laws.

  3. Well put Tori, bravo to you for being bold enough to post an article that many find too controversial to voice an opinion on.

We have a serious issue on our hands, how have we let it become ok and even desirable to laugh after every kill, as if you're exterminating vermin from the sky? It doesn't do our industry any good to show a complete lack of appreciation for the game we pursue so openly on television.

What bothers me even further, is why has he not received the 'Tiger Woods' treatment - How does he still have so many supporting corporate sponsors with such a heavy case against him? If they have any reason to question his ethics and representation (which, in my opinion, 23 indictments should be plenty of reasons), there ought to be a clause in the contract to drop him in a heartbeat. We as waterfowlers can not afford to let his questionable actions pass as ok, especially when a majority of his following are youth waterfowl hunters, the future of our sport.

  4. Tori, I believe that Delta should take the lead and produce a high quality program that shows all the wonderful things that go into a day out waterfowling. Canada in the Rough does a really good job with this and has worked with Delta before.
    Great Blog

  5. Your Article Did Not Say How Many Years In Prison/Jail He Got, How Much In Fines Or Loss Of Hunting Rights. Was He Even Found Guilty Of Any Thing. Sound's Like DRAMA To Me.

  6. Well put, Tori.

I am a non hunter. Reading about these alleged actions is all that it would take for me to lobby against hunters and hunter rights in the future.

Shooting geese in a park after luring them in with bread...Shame on you, Jeff!!

  7. I think the point that is being lost here is one of true integrity. This is not about whether you like or dislike Jeff Foiles. What it is about is the fact that Jeff Foiles must at all times be above reproach when it comes to the resource and his place in the industry. He should never ever put himself in this position period. The fact that there are charges pending is a court of law issue. The fact is in the court of public opinion he is guilty period. The best thing we can do is ignore him and for those of us in Alberta who see him, we should have the balls to tell him what we think of his approach to hunting.

We will let the court process play out.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I agree with much of what has been said here. Give Foiles due process and let the courts decide guilt or innocence. However, all hunters not just those who profit off of the resource have to hold themselves accountable not only to the law but to a higher moral standard. Simply put if you intend to harvest any animal it deserves to be treated with respect. Mr Foiles never respected the birds he harvested nor treated them with the respect they deserved.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Foiles gives us hunters a bad name. I was always taught to respect the resource and respect it, and to always give back and help. Foiles represents that macho, kill kill kill crowd, and unfortunately we have tons of kids that like him and folks like the Duck Commander, men who are nothing close to what real duck hunting is about. It's not about machismo, it's not about killing, it's about hunting ducks and learning about the outdoors, experiencing them firsthand and using what the good Lord gave us. I hope the judge throws the book at the creep, cuz he deserves every bit of it.
Let him be an example to all waterfowlers to conduct themselves like decent human beings and conservationists, which is what we should be and what Foiles never was.

  10. If he is found guilty of the US charges, I hope they remove his hunting rights for a minimum of 10 years and that he that he spends at least some time in prision. The CAN penalties are much steeper as for fines and prison time. That may be where he will spend prison time as they take such charges much more seriously than the US judical system does.

I believe one of the main issues beyond the if he guilty or not is this: The ethics involved--or the lack there of. And as Tori mentioned, what would the average non hunter think of his actions? For it is the non hunters that hold the keys to the future of waterfowl hunting in the US and CAN. As a hunter I am simply repulsed by his alleged actions. That being said, how would a non hunter react to this information? His actions already are tainting all law abiding hunters. And I have to wonder, so what else has he done that we are not even aware of? Now the possibilities of that scares the heck out of me.

  11. THROW THE BOOK AT HIM.HE SHOULD NEVER EVER BE ABLE TO HUNT IN THE U.S.A. OR CANADA AGAIN OR BE ALLOWED TO OWN OR HANDLE A FIREARM AGAIN.
I HOPE THEY FINE HIM TO THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE BY LAW.

  12. as the once late tony dean once said, all good sportsman should feel a little bit of sorrow for the animals and fish they take.
jeff foiles never really seamed to show that in his movies or way of hunting. i am not saying he didn't feel that personally off camera, but at least give a glimpse of it since you make the most popular waterfowl hunting videos in the world

  14. Anonymous - who thinks our panties are in a wad - the ranks of hunters are thinning. Most Americans support hunting, but don't do it, and honestly wouldn't really care if hunting was largely abolished in this country.

Even in rural areas, fewer kids are taught to hunt and fish these days. There is no room for "free PR" for the anti's. They will start in the Northeast and in California, and work their way inland through local and state policies (like firearm discharge ordinances), until they secure a Federal policy victory that can be applied regionally or nationally. Time range for this is 10-20 years. I intend to still be hunting at that time.

At which point we will all be saying, "Wait? You mean we can't hunt now?"

Seems worthy of getting our panties in a wad. Don't you think?

You think PETA and H$U$ aren't going to use this as a fundraising / legislative campaign?

  15. You people make me sick. Fine him the maximum? Never let him hunt again? Get real. So I guess none of you have ever taken pleasure in harvesting an animal? You've never laughed and hooped and hollered after making a long shot on a duck, or jumped up and down and hugged your son/dad after taking a big gobbler? You're all a bunch of hipocrits, including the author of this article!

Selling videos is what Jeff Foiles' business is about..... and making them entertaining and fun is what sells!!! I guarantee nobody that has commented on this article (or it's author) has ever hunted with Jeff. You know what the videos depict, AND THAT'S IT!!!

Let's all play the "Jump to Conclusions Game" and see what we come up with. You're all pathetic.

  16. Never respected the birds he harvested? IT'S A BIRD!!! The reason those birds are even alive is because all of us hunters donate our money and our time to protect their habitat. Has it crossed anyone's mind that Jeff Foiles has donated thousands in merchandise and money (much more than any of the haters on here) to organizations like DU AND DELTA WATERFOWL to help preserve that habitat!!!

  17. If we needed any other examples of his out of control ego and selfishness - he is is also in litigation with Patternmaster (who sponsered the loser for years) for Patent Infringment (summary attached) on those "turkey" chokes he sells/sold for waterfowl hunting. 18. First Off, I do know Jeff Foiles, so with that said I think am biased with these comments. How I know Jeff Foile's is by meeting him at outdoor shows. I have hunted with the man in the state of Illinois. This being said does not change my views of the situation. The nice thing about owning a computer is you can freely give your opinions to certain items and people. This subject really bothers me. I thought the reason that it bothered me was because I know the person that is being talked about. But after careful consideration the reason why it bothers me is because of the following.
Reason 1. People are quick to judge before the facts are relevant. Meaning,a person that gets indicted doesn't mean guilt or guilty. A person that gets indicted isnt even at the court room when the indictment is processed. People need to get a better handle on the judicial system before they comment.
Reason 2. It amazes me that Tori has had these disagreements with this man and only decides to comment on them when everyone else does. Why not comment on how much Foiles Migrators has donated to delta waterfowl. Why now? Why jump on the bandwagon like everyone else. The only thing that separates you from the others Tori is that you at least have Listed your name to the article. I applaud you for that.
Reason 3. Does this mean if found not guilty that all these people will come back on here (and other sites)and admit that they were wrong? I highly doubt it. Again by knowing Jeff please put these comments in the proper context that if found guilty I will admit that I was wrong. In a nutshell I am a believer in helping people that has helped me. Nothing these days on any site, news channel or anywhere is positive. This is my two cents. I hope I didn't offend anyone by this. If I have I apologize.

  19. OK, what Foiles did was wrong. That being said, is it safe to assume that none of you have ever done wrong? None of you have EVER done illegal drugs(felony)or drove when you were "pretty sure" you were below the legal limit(putting other motorists at risk)? Do you still cheer for your favorite sports team after one of their players drives drunk and kills someone(manslaughter)or been arrested for Domestic Violence etc etc etc? In the hunting world Foiles screwed up plain and simple. There are many people in our world that have done far worse things than kill to many ducks or geese. Foiles will have his day in court and will pay his dues. If you need a cause, try to stop people from protesting the funerals of our military men and women who died fighting for our right to post our opinion so freely. If you are one of the rare people who have never done wrong, please fire away at Foiles. For now, lets all do our part to better the image that some of you think Foiles has tainted. Good Luck hunting to all of you!

  20. At least get your facts right. You can shoot 8 geese a day in Alberta. http://www.albertaregulations.ca/huntingregs/
With that being said if he truly did all these things he shouldn't be allowed to ever hunt again.

  21. While I certainly agree with Tori's sentiments, this blog is a farce. Delta has accepted Foiles' advertising dollars for years while looking the other way as if they didn't know what was in the videos or how Foiles acts. Now Tori gets on the bandwagon with a scathing editorial? Get real. Delta is quickly becoming as shallow and market-driven as DU.

  22. Why just pick on Mr. Foiles??? I think you could lump pretty much the whole waterfowl industry in there. Some other examples? How about "Death Row Calls"??? How about the Fred Zink and his video "Band Hunters"? The whole culture of "whack em and stack em", black hoodies, bands as trophies, "Team This" and "Team That", has turned the past time of waterfowl hunting into a competitive sport! If you aren't using the latest and greatest flocked decoys, towed around in a trailer emblazoned with company logos, and using neon colored calls with names like "Call of Death", you aint squat in waterfowling! Sadly, it is the consumers who have driven the industry because they buy the products.

  23. There are two kinds of wild game violations. The most commonly ticketed, are the technical violations, which are the result of ignorance on the part of the hunter/fisherman, and our abused legal sytem that feels a need to write laws to dictate just about everything.

The other, the not nearly as often prosecuted violations, are the intentional abuses by the selfish and ego-driven. The ones that get caught are either un-imaginative, believe they are too important - making them above the law, or both.

If a CO watches a sportsman long enough, he/she will find something that allows them to write a ticket. Ahhh, don't forget, "ignorance of the law is no excuse." The true poacher knows he is being watched, and plays his hand accordingly. This is where the CO's have to earn their keep.

Foiles will probably get off, because his lawyers will find all the loop-holes and flaws in the investigations and evidence. It won't matter what his intentions were, even though everyone in the courtroom will know they were less than honorable.

Now for justice to be served, it's up to the whistleblowers, like Mr, McCormick, to inform the public what this pedestal-sitter has done to gain his fame.

  24. I think you need to get off your high horse and realize hunting isnt all sunsets and sunrises, and days in the marsh that are absolutely glamorous when its a very slow day with no kills. If I wanted to enjoy sunsets and sunrises Id do so by sitting on the back porch rather then putting in all the work to kill nothing.

As for why your vision of a movie wouldnt work....because very few people would buy your video. I challenge you to make a video showcasing how to clean your birds, its going to sit on the shelf and collect dust. You make waterfowling sound like its supposed to be a hippie sport...peace, love, and sunsets....come on man get real, when you go hunting you dont harvest animals, harvesting is for crops.

I by no means support Jeff's actions and am in no way backing him. But you do have to realize how much he has done for the sport rather then take away form the sport. Kids love him, these are the same kids who are buying licenses all over the country and whose money is going back to support the lands we hunt.

I dont think your problem lies with Foiles, I think your problem is the commercialization of waterfowl hunting across the nation and the over abundance of waterfowl hunters.

  26. After reading my earlier post I will agree that I shouldn't have used the word harvest it's overly PC. Duck hunters kill ducks. I will however, reiterate that you need to respect the animal you kill. You owe it to the animal you kill to treat it with a level of respect. PERIOD!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Like you, I think the problem with waterfowling videos is the fact that all you see is repetition of ducks getting shot. When you look back on your days in the blind, do you remember every duck you shot? Probably not, but you often remember the jokes told in the blind. The heckling of buddies when they miss, dogs doing their thing, etc. Sure, there always will be memories of that special duck (first band, first black duck, etc). However, you often will remember who was with you that day and the weather conditions as well. For me, waterfowling is about comraderie first, killing ducks second.

  28. I have hunted with Jeff and also worked shows and watched him turn away from kids to make a sale to an adult that had cash in hand. I used to follow him until at waterfowl weekend in Pittsfield, He charged a kid $ to tune a call and sign an autograph. When one of the staffer’s kids came he dropped everything for him. If you’re not in his small click you’re not going to get half of the attention you disserve no matter how much money you spend. I watched him cut in line in the bathroom while there were 15 guys waiting to get in at the bar after the show. When someone said something about waiting for 20 min he laughed and said “I’m Jeff Foiles” He is the most arrogant prick I ever met in this industry. These allegations fit his personality to a T. I have heard many stories of him trying to use his celebrity status to chase people out of hunting holes and blinds. Just how he tries to start controversy with every company that he doesn’t agree with, He did it with Tim Grounds and also with other companies that his ex staff has moved too. That’s just the two that stand out there is many more. I remember when the cops raided his office and FMI denied the whole situation. Even when this went public they tried to deny at first but quickly realized it was too big. Guys have backed off his staff because of the situation and I have heard of Jeff sending those people bills for stickers and calls and any gifts he gave to the staff. Jeff should not have put himself in this situation when he knows he has such a big following. Especially putting it on video, what are you thinking? If that’s not arrogance I don’t know what is. Even after floating the fourth he still kept breaking the law. Whether he did it or not there must be something on the countless hours of video. Don’t forget it was his own family and staff that turned him in. There are a lot of us that has killed one over the limit but it is the arrogant few that give all duck hunters a bad name. Killing 20 to 30 birds over is just a mass murder. The sad thing is he is a celebrity that has an unlimited amount of money that he has made from these followers. Just like any Hollywood star he will walk away with a fine. FMI will go on with only a little loss in profit and people will forgive and forget. Just like Paris Hilton he will be back on top within a year. It is up to us the consumer to boycott not only his products but everything he is involved in. I just can’t see him being found not guilty with undercover cops and all the witnesses and hours of video. Not to mention they tried to cover it up for so many years. If he’s found not guilty I will admit to the public I was wrong. Wish him the best of luck; we don’t need this bad attention. I just read an article where it named four TV shows that have been caught doing something wrong including Ted Nugent.

  29. One of my close friends met Foiles in Anoka several years ago and after meeting him, refuses to buy his calls based solely on Foiles attitude toward other people. Personally, i would never purposely excede my limit on any game, and i dont think most people would. But one of the top names (whether he did it or not) is making us all look like we dont care about the heritage. This type of incident causes me to feel ashamed to tell people I hunt. I think Foiles will get whats coming if he did it, and if found innocent, he will rebound. Being found guilty of something like this will destroy his legacy, whether the states sentencing reflects the scale of his crimes or not...

  30. Well yeah, guilty or not his image has been tarnished. Tori I'm with you on some of the programs he has produced. I don't know the man but have seen some of his footage and many just like his and it always bothers me to see outfitters disgustingly continue to slaughter waterfowl. I firmly believe they can produce programs that are educational and that are in good taste and sure they can show kill shots, but not the same bird over and over.
Depending where you are bag limits very which in my opinion is not wright! I'm talking places like Canada, Mexico. This is unethical, I mean really do they need to harvest 100+/- birds in one sitting. All they do is give fuel for the environmental groups to use against us.

  31. I am unable to make a judgement on Mr. Foiles' innocence or guilt on the charges. What I can say is that I have seen excerpts from his videos and, as a 50-year plus waterfowler, I find them repulsive. McCormick hit the nail on the head:

"Whatever happened to thoughtful storytelling and putting the kill into context? We need to showcase waterfowl hunting in all its glory—the beginning, the middle and the end."

I submit that the guys at "Habitat Flats", a first-class outfitter here in north Missouri, do just that. Their two DVD's (Burried in the Snows and Fuel the Fire) focus on the hard work involved in all the preparations, the magnificance of working birds, and the fellowship and comradiere that accompanies the chase...kill shots are minimized. These young men are distancing their program from the notion of "Whack 'em; Stack 'em" and prefer to focus on a total quality experience. Other guide services should learn from their example. I plan to send McCormick copies of these videos. I think he'll be pleased.

This Foiles affair may indeed prove useful to the waterfowling community in the long run. If Foiles has become the modern day mentor for a kill oriented generation of hunters, perhaps it is because too few youth have been taught to respect anything but the kill. If the commercialization of the sport has encouraged the likes of Foiles, we must ask ourselves how the "industry" of hunting has displaced the inherent wonder of the hunt which lured so many of us in the first place. Who should we look to blame? The answer is us.

As an over 50 hunter, I readily confess to being part of the "industry". I like the new gear, own more decoys than I need, and have patronized the very companies that continue to support Foiles. Hell, I even have a Foiles call on my lanyard.I do not intend to stomp that piece up equipment into the neaest marsh any more than I would donate my duck blind camo parka to the Goodwill store.

But Foiles has caused me to re - think my role in all of this.If individuals and companies wish to make a living through hunting, so be it. But I do not need to be a bystander who lets others define my identity through their brand power. It is not enough that someone promotes the waterfowling "industry". They must do so in an ethical fashion that does not discredit those of us who are not in it for the money. I have sent off numerous e-mails over the past few weeks to companies that promote their products with an ethic I find increasingly distasteful. I have cancelled my subscription to WildTV as well. If we don't like the attitude of Foiles and his supporters, then we can let them know in a way they understand best. Do not buy their videos, do not purchase their products, and do not attend their seminars. Most of all, let the larger players like DU, Delta, Cabelas, Bass Pro and the media providers know that you will only spend when you don't feel uncomfortable doing so.
Trust me. If enough of us oppose the "total carnage" marketing concept, they will get it.

  33. Tori,

It seems that you have generated some fairly steep opinions, but that is not shocking...as a "reporter", I guess that it is all one should really expect from you.

I am really glad that you observed Jeff Foiles ONCE at a show and feel like you have a complete grasp on who he is as a person. Obviously you have never met Jeff and spent any amount of time with him. You watch a few minutes of teenagers admiring him and you think that the waterfowl world worships him?!? Give me a break.

Jeff spends time at shows showing anyone and EVERYONE who comes to his booth how to call, call better or helping them for as long as they need. Not to mention the fact that he spends day after day tuning calls and fixing any issues that customers have with their current calls. (And in response to the above comment about him charging to tune a call...ever think that the customer needed new guts or reeds? Just a thought...)It makes me sick to think that you would just have nasty things to say based on what you think others think of him. Wow, you are a great guy.

I understand that Foiles makes videos, pretty much EVERYONE that is involved in waterfowling makes videos these days. It is funny how you pick NOW when he is in a negative spotlight to complain about this. Have you ever complained PUBLICLY until now??
Some people may not like the way that he approaches his videos, but if you do not like it, don't buy it. It is a pretty simple thing. There is nothing more to it than that. I would love to see you produce some YouTube videos that you think are appropriate about waterfowling and see how many views you get. I bet you do not get as many as him. EVER.

As far as the charges, there is this wonderful thing in the United States of America called innocent until proven guilty. To you and all of the other bandwagoners on here, it is funny how you want to jump to conclusions. And Tori, SHAME ON YOU for reporting incorrect information. What a great reporter, and working for Delta, it is a shame that you are not knowledgeable about limits, and reporting correct information. Seems like you need to do your homework before you write your next damning blog.

This blog is ridiculous. You have stooped to a low by joining everyone on the bandwagon, being a judgmental fool and also writing as if pretending that Foiles has not donated money to Delta MANY MANY times (please see above comment about Delta being like DU). If you have an opinion on the charges, awesome, but do yourself a favor and make opinions on him PERSONALLY based on what he is CHARGED with. Didn't your mother teach you any manners? Or did she miss the lesson with you when you were a kid??

I operate on the eye for an eye policy...I think in return for you passing judgment on someone you don't know (especially when you can't even get your facts straight) I will judge you on this blog, and I based on it, I will say that you are an overly opinionated bandwagoner who likes to toot his own horn....

ps get a grip on life.

  34. foiles is not getting out of all of it he had undercover agents there while half of this was going on so say bye bye to you little buddy "Anonymous." and what is wrong with flashy calls? they colors are to sell them its the same thing pretty much as the calls you were using 15years ago just they come in colors to sell better that's all that is about. I do hope Jeff gets punished hard also he was a d*** to me and my cousin at a hunting show because we walked by his area and no one was there and we were wearing "ZINK" hoodies. I know allot of people and also guides here in Co that have had problems with him trying to do business with them and how he comes at it at a show the price is this then the next day the price is above the retail now come on with that. Jeff is not a good person to have around here in the water fowling community if you want the sport to grow because i can guarantee you that kids see how he is doing things and they will start following him. And he knew damn well what he was doing and also continued to do it. Now if you have 1 bird left and shoot and 2 fall and the wardens there and you explain no big deal really. but continuously shooting 10 15 20 25 birds over the limit that's not a little mistake that was made. Almost every charge here in the US has to do with shooting over the limit except for maybe 5 and that still leaves 18 now would would you consider that a mistake or a "lucky 2 birds 1 shot?" Personally i have never supported him with anything calls shirts DVDs nothing nor will I. He deserves to lose hunting privileges for awhile after he is done with everything. The little deal he did here in colorado is going to really affect the hunters and PETA, we already have enough problems with them.

  35. I have stood in front of Jeff’s booth and had no help. Don’t let anyone tell you he helps everybody. Let an 8 yr old walk over to Jeff’s booth with a poly call, and have a guy walk over with 2 calls and 2 hoodies in his hand and see where Jeff’s attention goes. The sad thing is that the guy with the hoodies and acrylic calls is more than likely to be a staffer that will be going to bed with Jeff that night. Any Foiles staffer gets so pissed off when he is involved with these allegations, they have been happening for the past five years. Remember floating the fourth shell. First he denied all of this then blamed it on his ex wife and now look. Then he said “gas was too high in Canada”. And that’s why he quit going up there. OK. How bout in fallin skies 8 in Colorado on the last bird of the hunt Foiles says we need “one more bird” then, 3 guys unload on a goose and hit it 9 times It is in a cornfield with a dog, what’s the excuse on that? That bird isn’t going anywhere. I will admit I have popped a few extra rounds in birds on the way down after a long day afield. When you shoot 2000 birds a year there is no need for that. Then he turns to the camera and says that’s it. What if a flock came in three guys with loaded guns, what do you think was going to happen if it wasn’t a single? He ruined the name of every waterfowler in America because he is such an icon, whether he did it or not the bad karma is still there and 36 charges in two countries. What the hell is wrong with the people that still have their head up his ass? The best thing we can do is just ignore him and his followers. The ones that are sticking up for him probably are in the indictment as well. Just Google Jeff Foiles and you will see every time a Foiles follower has nothing else to say they bring up grounds, duck commander, Zink staffers or other big names that have been in trouble with the law. The biggest thing that bothers me about this is that they did not video tape it and sell to the public for a very big profit. I have brought people to his booth to buy calls and they have walked away from the booth because he was so arrogant. One show we drove 100 miles just so a 16 yr old could meet Jeff, he didn’t show up and the staff behind the booth would even give any acknowledgement that he was there. When he wanted to try a call they gave it to him turned away and sat down. And yes I have said publicly I was getting rid of all my Foiles gear last summer after he got rid of Sean. And that was because how they kept bashing Sean after he left. It seems like anybody that they have a grudge with they will do anything they can to ruin the name of an up and coming person in this industry. Shawn Stahl and Tim Grounds are other names that went toe to toe with Jeff and his black hoodies crew. Look where they are at now. This is a hard enough industry to get in we don’t need to all be fighting with each other. It seems like in the off season too many people just get bored.

  36. Nash Buckingham is rolling in his grave. Foiles is/was only in it for the money. Foiles was never a true hunter, simply a bad example of a hunter. What a poor example to the young hunters! Boycott Foiles and send your money to Delta!

  37. Well, well, well....Bet a dollar the lengthy comments defending this issue are coming from Pittsfield Il. or those unable to deal with the reality of their hero being truly flawed. Denial, denial, denial.

Chicken shits all the way. If federal agents undercover, having in on film more that once isn't enough to prove there is guilt. I'm not sure what does it. Federal and State attorneys along with Canadian officials don't spend 5 yrs and time and money on a wild goose chase...pardon the pun. I's have been dotted and T's crossed.

As to some of the comments above. Foiles doesn't have the kind of money Tiger Woods does or any of the Hollywood Starlets so he won't bounce back in a year. He won't bounce back at all. Lawyers will walk away with most of 2010 and 2011 sales revenue.

Advertising in a magazine does not equate donations to an organization like Delta and DU. Giving products to a few banquets is a write off if anything, and hardly a donation to that organization.

I commend Tori for stepping up and addressing this, I've long been awaiting when someone would take the reins on this and say something. In Tori's defense...whom ever it was giving him hell for posting incorrect bird limits in Canada... The comments in the article are those taken directly from the newspaper article and or indictment.

It's sad that too many are falling back with "who hasn't shot over the limit" or "who hasn't broke the law". It's wrong, illegal that's the lesson here. Point is this was all done for the benefit of finacial gain. Birds were being shot to better the video production, bands collected to support an image. All for more money. This is the crime and an ugly one at that. And crimes a jury won't look too highly upon.

My disgust lies with the Sponsors that are stil involved along with the retailers and consumers buying the brand. Who's the bigger idiot, the Criminal or those that support the brand because they can still make money off it. Next in line....the IRS and we all know what they did with Al Capone. My good luck wishes are to the hunter/consumer...Find your values, and make your future hunting and buying decisions based on good ones.

  39. Thanks Tori,
Foiles is probably the worst example of many making money on carnage videos. Having seen some I came away wondering "geez, what did those ducks/geese do to those guys to deserve that?"

Can you imagine what the anti hunters can do marketing those videos against us? It's not Foiles Tori indicts, its the entire industry of wack-and-stack glorification.

  40. i just wish somewho it could turn out to be false .. or atleast he does need the fullest and stearnest legal punishment possible... his calls are atleast in the best two brands ive ever been blessed to use ... i just wish the men hunting with him would have grew balls to step up and say jeff we r doing this for all the wrong reasons... but i guess he thought it was the only way to make the best videos .. but where im from i see and here of same things going on everyday and it is cery upsetting, how long the sting went on and the kills they provided for him to get him om nearly 40 charges ... i wish it wasnt true but i will have to continue to use his calls.. take ur punishment and get back to being a true hunter jeff if u ever have the chance again.. god bless

I have to admit I have not heard of this man before a hunting partner of mine forwarded this to me. I do not know if these allegations against this man are true or not, but if they are found to be true he should be penalized to the max. He should lose all future gun owner ship rights, and be banned from ever getting a hunting license in the future. He should be fined heavily and all money should be used to help further waterfowl populations. What ever jail time if any comes with this sort of non sense he should receive maximum amount of time. I have hunted in and around Camros, Alberta many times with Bittern Lake Outfitters and I can say our outfitter/guides and members of the hunting party always respected and followed the limits dictated by law. If you have ever had the pleasure of hunting waterfowl in Alberta you know there is plenty opportunity to shoot limits. Beside the limits in Canada are very liberal compared to the US. Its dispicable that a man with this kind of platform abuse the hunting laws as he has allegedly done. Instead he should have used his platform to promote waterfowl conservation so future hunters can enjoy such a great sport!

  44. ALL I WANT TO SAY IS THAT JEFF FOILES MAKES -BY FAR- THE BEST SHORT REED GOOSE CALL IN THE INDUSTRY, WE ALL RUN FOILES CALLS AND THEY SING A WATERFOWL MELODY THAT NO OTHER CALL CAN DO. AS FAR AS WHAT HE HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF, IM NOT THE JUDGE OR THE JURY.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I've never seen a Jeff Foiles' video but I have seen others. Most are not worth watching as they show kill after kill from the same people in the same situation ad nauseum. Mr. McCormick's article portrays him as a self-serving egotist. I suspect that all people who make their living from the media are too. This doesn't make them lawbreakers. Mr. McCormick also derives part of his livelihood from the media. I noticed that he suggests making a video showing cleaning waterfowl in the field with a setting sun in the background. Unless I'm badly mistaken, it is against the law to leave the field and transport waterfowl without leaving at least one fully-feathered wing attached to the bird. Some states require leaving the head on also. This proposed video would net Mr. McCormick a ticket and he too would be a lawbreaker.
My point is not to discredit anyone but to show that game laws and especially federal game laws sometimes make little sense. An L.E.O. would gladly "write him up" for this duck cleaning episode. Perhaps, besides stopping obvious harmful practices in the field, the game laws should be rewritten to include some common sense.

  46. To All the non hunters that are posting on this wall about this helping them shut hunting down.Who do you think you guys are! me and my dad are living the dream through duck season and we arent rich we dont build duck calls or anything like that! We only limited out on ducks 2 times this year but we love what we do and we go about 3 days a week! Very few duck hunters that have passion for the sport a like jeffdoes. We respect ducks and respect the sport. Anyone who sets 60 to five hundred decoys out in 0 degree tempature just to kill 6 ducks! You cant tell me that you dont have respect for the sport. So i told you all that to tell you this. Not many hunters are like that if we didnt hunt we would die/starve all we eat is duck! ao if you think you can take this away from uss thank who do you think you are do you think you are to take this away from me!

  47. Why the heck doesn't the Outfitter get charged as well? They are running the hunt. They are the ones guiding him to his quarry.

  48. I question the brain capacity of one that films his crimes and then sells it for profit. I am guilty of purchasing such films. I suppose with money comes ego and a lot of us help build it. To bad I can not return the two videos I own. The lack of respect for our natural resources is deserving of a lifetime ban from further pursuit or to profit or gain. How could one be associated with anything like this? If it looks like crap and smells like crap I tend to believe it is crap. Maybe not.

Well written article. Great points. All waterfowlers should take the time to read this, learn a thing or two, and reflect upon their own practices.

  50. I find it absolutly unbelivable that some folks think he may actually be innocent of all charges, the investigation runs from 2004 to 2010 with a formal indictment also comming in 2010, the feds have hard copy of every hunt this man participated in in the last 8 plus years as he was dumb enough to film them all. I personaly know someone involved in some of the hunts, feds showed up at his home with pictures, dates and much more showing his envolvement, undercover agents hunted with him several times while crimes where committed, the man is guilty as sin. That said don't take my word for it, give him his day in court and see the verdict for yourself, unfortunately no matter what happens or what he is found guilty of, he will still have a huge cult following of retards.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Is he guilty yet? Wow, I realize the case against Foiles is pretty strong and IF 1/5 of it is true then he is a self-absorbed guy who lost his way in a sea of green(backs) and the roar of the crowd.

Still America.....I would hate to be thrown on a spit before I was proven guilty.

  54. I to have been "turned off" by the hunting, read, KILLING, videos. Have always said the graphic kill shots are harmful to our sport. I also have always wondered what is done with all the birds killed. Got into a disagreement with a Wisconsin guide who stated he was taking over 5 FLATS of shells to Canada ! Was basically told he wasn't going to drive that far to only shoot a legal posession limit !

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree that the "hunting" videos probably don't give the waterfowl hunting community the greatest image, and that is something I don't really like. Nor do I like the "celebrity waterfowling culture". When they have "Duck Commander Edition" steel shot, it is obvious that waterfowling is cashing in on celebrity, just like any other industry. I guess that's just part of the modern retail sales industry.
The fact that Jeff Foiles is from Illinois, is embarrassing to me, as an Illinois guy myself. He is of course, entitled to his day in court- but the allegations, particularly the one of the park geese, are fairly disturbing.

    ReplyDelete
  56. What hunting video do you want to see? It all comes to the harvest at the end of the day. I'd rather see a good kill shot on camera than a bunch of winged birds. There is nothing wrong with a LEGAL HARVEST video. As for 50 over the limit, thats bad news. If watching kill shots is "too graphic" you need to check yourself and see if hunting is for you. If you think hunting should not be filmed don't watch, don't comment, and stick to bird watching. I like watching birds work in and watching a good rain out in a flock.

  57. I was just laid up with a surgery and had the sad opportunity to watch the Fallin' Skies videos... The people on here defending videos like that don't know how to really enjoy a hunt... I was repulsed by the footage shown. C'mon, a close up, slo-mo of an injured goose getting ripped through by a load?! Yeah, all of you that defend that kind of behavior just indentified what kind of "hunters" you are. Watch a Primos video, they have class.
I am embarrassed to say I watched most of those videos, but now I have my own opinion of them. We'll never act so primitive and dumb, its an embarrassment to the North American Sportsmen

    ReplyDelete
  58. He's a meat hog. Hunting isn't just about killing ducks it's about the whole experience. I hope I never see Foiles at game fair and hopefully his world crumbles down to nothing. He deserves it.

  59. Jeff Foiles was at Game Fair in MN 8-19-2011. His booth was not very busy and I overheard a few people make comments about him being allowed to exhibit, the extra large pants he must buy to comfortably carry his huge pair of balls, or "I thought he was in jail".
It still amazes me......how many kids still support him, by wearing his cool clothing etc. I'm worried about the younger generation (twenty somethings) do they really believe his macho kill them all attitude and over zealous videos represent true waterfowl hunting and heritage? Sadly we are letting the youth think this man and his kronies are hunters who should be admired. I'm embarassed to be a waterfowl hunter.
Maybe we could just divide the waterfowlers into two groups - kinda like the big ten did -

    The Sportsmen
    and
    The Showmen
I know where I fall - what about you?

  63. Well, the verdicts are in, Fowles pled to two of 28 charges in the US and to one Criminal Code (equivalent to Felony in the US) and five Migratory Bird Act charges (equivalent to Misdemeanour in US). His hunting club also has pled guilty to two charges in the US (sentencing in December '11).
US: 13 months imprisonment and $100,000 fine; Canada $14,500 fine.
He is also prohibited from hunting for two years in the US and three in Canada.

The Criminal Conviction in Canada also make re-entering Canada in the future difficult, as it carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment, the threshold where a person is inadmissible. The US Convictions, all Misdemeanours, would not have been serious enough to prevent re-entering Canada.

To re-enter Canada would require specific permission which is decided on a case-by-case basis and must come in the form of a Warrant from the Minister for Immigration himself (equivalent to a US Federal Cabinet Secretary).

It might also be worth noting for US readers that the crime Cruelty to Animals is a new amendment that has only been in force since 2008. Previous legislation viewed the crime as less serious (maximum two years in prison). Because they chose to proceed under the newer law, charges would have to be related to actions by Fowles only after April 2008.
